Kalee Appleton and Ross Faircloth both explore the digital world with unique curiosity. Kalee experiments with creation of new digital environments through code manipulations to degrade and change the image to create a metaphor for the degradation of our physical environment. While Ross explores the fully formed world of video games like a documentary photographer looking for the decisive moment of the Call of Duty.

This body of work explores the theme of reality vs. virtual reality, utilizing the popular media of video games and in particular, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. As a child of the 90’s I grew up alongside the progression of the video game culture. Starting with the Nintendo Entertainment System to now, all-encompassing entertainment consoles like Sony’s Playstation 3, video game consoles constantly competed in “console wars” to outdo each other with superior graphics (ability to visually replicate reality). This relationship to the video game culture is where this work originates. Looking at the accelerating rate of technological advancement, this generation of consoles may be the last to have such obvious signs of a virtual nature. Current video games have a visually defining line between virtual reality and reality that is growing thinner provides the main catalyst for this work.  This defining line is found in both the glitches involving the textures/structure of the worlds as well as the delayed timing responses involved in online, real-time, gameplay.

Bit Rot is a series that depicts how the digital revolution has altered and skewed the way in which life is viewed and experienced. With the drastic change in how some people have begun to rely on digital technology, come the inevitable positive and negative affects on the future evolution in a cognitive, social and emotional way. The intangible information of digital technology has altered the way in which society all over the world communicates and has in many respects made life more convenient, but has also complicated lives. A digital and unfathomably large environment that is constantly growing and changing has quickly replaced the physical environment in which society has previously operated. By corrupting the digital image file through binary code manipulation, this series symbolically depicts the effect and consequences the digital age has on our lives and environment.
